PONTIANAK – A prolonged drought has made it increasingly difficult for residents of Pontianak and surrounding areas to access clean water for their daily needs. Communities around Ujung Pandang, Pontianak, have also been affected, with residents struggling to obtain sufficient water for drinking and cooking.
In response, Gemawan distributed 4,000 liters of clean water to residents in the Ujung Pandang area on Wednesday, September 9, 2025. The distribution took place at Rumah Gesit Borneo, which served as a collection point where residents could obtain water while supplies lasted. Gemawan purchased the water from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Pontianak.
“We purchased this water from the Indonesian Red Cross in Pontianak,” said Arniyanti, a Gemawan activist.
Arniyanti explained that this was the first round of clean water distribution. Gemawan had prepared four water storage tanks, three of which were filled during the initial delivery.
“This is our first round of distribution. We hope to continue with additional deliveries to help ease the burden on residents,” she added.
The distributed water came from a mountain water source. Before distribution, Gemawan carried out water safety procedures. Residents receiving the water were also advised to boil it before drinking or using it for food preparation.
From the time the water arrived until midday, residents took turns visiting the distribution point, bringing water containers to collect clean water. Information about the distribution spread through neighborhood leaders (RT) and word of mouth.
One resident explained that the collected water would be used for essential household needs, particularly drinking and cooking.
“We’re collecting this water for our own daily needs, especially for drinking and cooking rice. Our rainwater reserves haven’t just run out; everything has completely dried up. It’s the same for everyone along Jalan Petani. Finding drinking water has become really difficult,” the resident said.
The prolonged drought has made access to clean water an increasingly urgent concern for local communities. This distribution is part of Gemawan’s efforts to help residents meet their basic needs amid ongoing water shortages.
Gemawan plans to continue distributing clean water in subsequent rounds and remains committed to assisting communities struggling to obtain water throughout the dry season.
Information about upcoming distributions will be shared through Gemawan’s Instagram account.
