Knowledge of textiles and the various techniques used to produce them has been passed down from generation to generation. Kalengkang embroidery emerged through cultural exchanges with foreign communities and is believed to have historical connections to India.
Unlike conventional embroidery, Kalengkang uses metallic threads, which may contain gold or silver. These materials create a shimmering embroidered surface, giving the fabric an elegant and luxurious appearance. Over time, Kalengkang evolved beyond its traditional association with royal families and the nobility, becoming part of the wider community’s cultural life.
This book represents an effort to reconnect the public, particularly younger generations, with the cultural heritage of Kalengkang embroidery. It brings together knowledge of Kalengkang’s historical origins in West Kalimantan, its diverse motifs, embroidery techniques, traditional uses, and the artisans who continue to preserve this craft. The book also explores various initiatives undertaken to safeguard its existence and ensure that this valuable cultural heritage is passed on to future generations.
