Gemawan again held a Workshop on Dissemination of Research Results and Learning Module Practices on Young Women’s Leadership in Protecting Forests, the Environment, and Climate Resilience in West Kalimantan. This activity took place over two days at Madang Longhouse, Menua Sadap Village, Embaloh Hulu District, Kapuas Hulu Regency.

This activity aims to disseminate research results related to young women’s leadership, while sharing good practices that have grown at the village level. Furthermore, this workshop also serves as a space for capacity building for participants through the testing of learning modules developed based on local community experiences.

Rahma, an activist from Gemawan, explained that this activity involved participants from three hamlets in Menua Sadap Village, namely Kalayam Hamlets, Karangan Bunut Hamlets, and Sadap Hamlets. The participants consisted of young women and mothers who have been active in social life and environmental management in the village.

“For two days, the activity was filled with workshops and module trials held at Madang Longhouse. Discussions were active, covering issues of climate change, gender equality, and the strategic role of young women in climate change mitigation efforts in their areas,” said Rahma.

Rahma, who is also the Program Manager at Gemawan, stated that this activity is part of a series of module trials in several regions in West Kalimantan. She hopes that the developed module can become a relevant and applicable learning tool for young women, particularly in Kapuas Hulu.

“This is the third region where the workshop and module trial have been conducted. We hope this module is truly beneficial and can strengthen the role of young women in leading and protecting their region, especially in facing the climate crisis,” she said.

Through this activity, Gemawan targets several important achievements, including the dissemination of research results to the community and stakeholders, the identification of good practices from the three hamlets as learning models, and the trial of the module which will be refined based on participant feedback.

Furthermore, this activity is also expected to enhance participants’ capacity to understand environment-based young women’s leadership, strengthen cross-regional and cross-sectoral collaborative networks, and produce strategic recommendations for the sustainability of the program following the Reversing Environmental Degradation in Africa and Asia (REDAA).

With a local experience-based approach, Gemawan affirms that young women have an important role as agents of change in protecting forests and the environment, and in building community resilience in the face of the climate crisis at the grassroots level. (Izhar)
