Perempuan Muda menjaga iklim

With the theme “Young Women’s Leadership among Indigenous Communities for Forest and Peatland Restoration in West Kalimantan,”
Gemawan, in collaboration with the Institut Dayakologi, held an event at the Bumbun Village Office, Sadaniang Subdistrict, Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan, on Thursday (August 15, 2024).

Empowering Local Voices

Gemawan activist Ageng explained that the activity served as a platform for sharing and learning together — exploring the role of women in managing forests and land within their territories.

“This program is a collaboration between Gemawan and the Institut Dayakologi, involving three groups of young women. We wanted to understand their aspirations and perspectives about managing their lands and forests,” said Ageng.

During discussions, participants expressed hopes for regeneration — ensuring that younger generations can continue managing their ancestral lands sustainably.

“We realize that change cannot be achieved by one person or one group alone. Through collective effort and inter-village collaboration, new ideas can emerge from their traditional ways of life — managing the land as if it were their own child. This spirit of care and connection offers hope for the future of forest and land management,” Ageng continued.

Women as Guardians of Nature

Erniliana, or Emi, a women’s activist from the Institut Dayakologi, highlighted the strong enthusiasm of participants:

“Despite unfavorable weather, they still came and actively participated in discussions. That shows how eager they are to learn and grow.”

She explained that the discussion was designed to be simple but meaningful:

“We talked about the role of women in natural resource management based on local wisdom. It’s important because women are the ones who interact with nature every day — they work with it, access it, and depend on it.”

Emi emphasized the need for continued accompaniment to ensure lasting impact:

“This process shouldn’t stop here. It’s not just about sitting together and talking — but about real actions that lead to change for women’s groups in this community.”

Closing the session, she encouraged the young participants with an empowering message:

“To the young generation: be aware of your identity. It’s okay to admire other cultures, but be prouder of your own — because that’s your true identity.”
