Buku Pelestari Kehidupan Gemawan

The Pelestari Kehidupan book serves as a record of the knowledge and best practices gathered by Gemawan’s community organizers (COs) throughout the program’s implementation. The narratives contained within aim to immortalize the wisdom and innovation of the people of West Kalimantan in managing their natural environment sustainably—while also standing as proof of their contribution in mitigating the escalating impacts of the climate crisis.

Through the program Enhancing the Role of Community Groups toward Sustainable Village Livelihoods in West Kalimantan, Gemawan seeks to strengthen the role and partnership of civil society organizations (CSOs) and community groups with local governments through legal frameworks and participatory approaches. The program also enhances the capacity of over 1,500 community members at the grassroots level to protect their sources of livelihood, promote peace, and advance justice across West Kalimantan.

Throughout the program, at least 150,000 hectares of forest and land have been successfully protected through various local schemes and initiatives for forest and land management in five districts of West Kalimantan. Social Forestry (PS) and Village Spatial Planning (Tata Ruang Desa) became the key frameworks applied—adapted to local resources and guided by the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (Padiatapa). Each community’s relationship with nature is shaped by its own wisdom and lived experience, reflecting the diversity of ecological knowledge across the region.

Quoting Freire: “It is not enough for people to come together in dialogue in order to gain knowledge of their social reality. They must act together upon their environment in order critically to reflect upon their reality and so transform it through further action and critical reflection.” (Paulo Freire)
