The Bumi Inisiatif Community, a newly formed environmental group in Singkawang, held its inaugural event titled “Clean Up Day Goes To School” with the theme “Trash Busters: The Mission Clean Up.” The first activity in this environmental movement took place at SMP Negeri 2 Singkawang (State Junior High School 2).
The event was held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, coinciding with the school’s regular cleaning schedule. It was used as an opportunity to build a spirit of collaboration in maintaining cleanliness while educating students on proper waste management practices. The school administration warmly welcomed the initiative and provided full support, reflecting its commitment to fostering a clean and healthy learning environment.
Collective Action for a Cleaner School
The activity was a collaboration between Bumi Inisiatif Community, Gemawan Association, and Bank Sampah Asoka (Asoka Waste Bank), involving all students from grades 7 to 9.
The students showed great enthusiasm throughout the event.
“I learned something new, especially about the importance of sorting and managing waste from an early age,” said one of the participating students.
Clean Up Day Goes To School: From Action to Education
Beyond the cleaning activities, the event featured an educational session led by Anisah Rochayati, an activist from Bank Sampah Asoka. She explained practical waste-sorting techniques at home and how waste can be transformed into economically valuable products.
“Sorting waste at home is crucial — it’s the first step to turning trash into something useful,” she emphasized.
The session also showcased examples of upcycled crafts, including bags made from recycled cooking oil pouches and milk sachets.
After the clean-up, representatives from the three organizations met with the Principal of SMPN 2 Singkawang. Anisah proposed establishing a school waste bank, with Bank Sampah Asoka serving as a long-term mentoring partner to ensure sustainability.
Youth as Environmental Torchbearers
Muhammad Daffa from Gemawan underscored the vital role of youth in environmental protection:
“They are the next generation carrying the torch of environmental awareness. Activities like this are the first steps in building that consciousness,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nara, a representative of the Bumi Inisiatif Community, affirmed their commitment to expanding the program:
“We plan to reach all junior and senior high schools in Singkawang,” she explained.
Collaboration for a Greener Generation
The school expressed appreciation for the initiative, which is expected to inspire other educational institutions. Bumi Inisiatif Community extended its gratitude for the warm welcome and cooperation from SMPN 2 Singkawang.
Collaborations like this demonstrate the power of synergy between communities, schools, and civic organizations in shaping a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens — young people who care deeply for the Earth and act to protect it.
